Vauxhall Mokka X Pricing Announced

If you're in the market for a funky crossover that oozes style, you could have shortlisted the Vauxhall Mokka. If so, I suggest you wait for the Mokka X's arrival in October.

The frugal 1.6-litre turbodiesel produces 110 horsepower, and with a 6-speed manual gearbox it's capable of a claimed 72.4 mpg, emitting 103 g/km. Shame there's no tax-free option, something that Renault already has under its belt with the Captur's dCi 90 and dCi 110 engines.

Entry-level Design Nav models come equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, front fog lights and an 8-inch IntelliLink infotainment system.

Top-of-the-range Elite Nav features luxuries such as leather upholstery and heated front seats and steering wheel.

Engine choices are a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol with 115 horsepower, however it's the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol that really packs a punch with 140 horsepower and some low-down shove. Diesel engines are available too, the 1.6-litre unit can be had with 110 or 136 horsepower.

The 1.6-litre petrol engine is what sets the foundation for each trim level's pricing, which goes like this:

• Design Nav - £17,590
• Active - £19,655
• Elite - £22,155
• Elite Nav - £22,855

An upgrade to the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine will cost you £655 on all trims apart from Design Nav where it comes in at £720.

Upgrade your 1.4 to automatic for £930, or to all-wheel-drive for £1,740 (£1,580 on Design Nav). Upgrade the 1.4 all-wheel-drive to automatic for a further £1,260.

The 1.6 diesel can be had with or without Vauxhall's fuel-saving ecoFLEX technology, on the 110 or 136 horsepower model. Either way, it'll cost you zero, nothing, nada. Make the 1.6 136 an automatic for £1,005 (another £10 for Design Nav), or to manual all-wheel-drive for £1,700.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer Pricing

The new, latest-generation Zafira Tourer has been officially released and will be in showrooms from October, and the strategy Vauxhall has opted for couldn't be more simple.

Your first point for consideration is whether you want petrol power, or do you prefer diesel? Ok, now that you've decided, it's time to select which engine best suits your needs. Well, that's what usually happens, except Vauxhall has just two engines.

The 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol produces 140 horsepower, and the 2.0-litre turbodiesel produces a respectable 170 horsepower, which means the 1.6-litre turbodiesel of old will not be carried over. All we can do is hope that these two engines will suit everyone's driving needs.

Nevertheless, both are available with manual or automatic transmissions. Choose the 2.0 CDTi with manual transmission and you get stop/start which helps reign in the CO2 emission figure to 129 g/km. You'll be looking at MPG figures in the mid-50s. Slightly disappointing after having considered that the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso has a 110 horsepower diesel engine that promises 74.3 mpg and sub-100 g/km of CO2 making it free to tax. Even the BMW 220d Grand Tourer slips into the CO2 category below the Zafira Tourer, promising over 60 mpg. The Zafira Tourer, in fact, shares similar stats to the 220d xDrive - BMW's four-wheel-drive 7-seater.

Maybe engines are not Vauxhall's strong point in the Zafira Tourer range, but build quality is something that certainly doesn't disappoint, and there's plenty of options to choose from. See below the trim levels' pricing when specified with the 1.4i engine.

Should you want to make this a 1.4i with automatic transmission, you can add £1,520. Automatic transmission for your diesel engine will set you back £1,125 on Design, Energy, SE and Tech Line, or £1,060 on SRi, SRi Nav, Elite and Elite Nav.

Entry-level Design comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors and Vauxhall's 7-inch IntelliLink infotainment system which is optionally available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

Top-of-the-range Elite Nav adds the upgraded satellite navigation system as well as 18-inch alloys, a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats with leather upholstery, electronic climate control and front fog lights.

Zafira Tourer Gets a Very Vauxhall-esque Facelift

Around the front, the refreshed Zafira Tourer will gain new headlights not too dissimilar from those we've seen in other facelifts across the Vauxhall range, as well as fully redesigned upper and lower grilles. Horizontal effects such as the chrome bar on the upper grille help give the car the illusion of being wider, essentially giving it more road presence.

Formerly, the Zafira's dashboard was found to be very cluttered with what seemed like hundreds of buttons set below a dashtop-mounted infotainment screen. This screen has now been moved down, set into the dashboard, and taking the place of many buttons. A new instrument cluster and tweaked steering wheel design finish off the interior. The R4.0 IntelliLink infotainment system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, however this can be upgraded to the Navi 950 IntelliLink system with satellite navigation.

Despite being a practical 7-seater, sometimes it's just a few passengers that you'll find yourself carrying. That's why the middle seat of the second row can fold away to uncover armrests for the outermost seats, which in turn slide backwards and more towards the centre of the vehicle. This helps give the new Zafira Tourer a more premium feel as opposed to being a utilitarian van 24/7.

It hasn't lost any practicality, though. In 5-seat form, a total of 710 litres of storage space is available. Fold down the middle row and a 1,860-litre cargo area is uncovered at your disposal.

The facelifted Zafira Tourer will be in showrooms this October on '66' plates.

Top Gear's Reasonably Priced Car up for Grabs

Back in 2002 Top Gear relaunched. It wasn't until the second series that James May joined Richard Hammond and of course Jeremy Clarkson, but since then 175 episodes have brought in hundreds of millions of views in 170 countries.

For seven series, the Suzuki Liana was the reasonably priced car. It was later followed by the Chevrolet Lacetti and Kia Cee'd. The twentieth series welcomed the Vauxhall Astra which is now up for auction.



Finished in Power Red, the 115 bhp 1.6-liter petrol Astra has five doors and belongs to the Tech Line trim level. It features:

Sports Tourer Estate Joins the Astra Family

Having already made a great impression, the Astra family is now extending with the addition of a more practical estate. It goes on sale this month with a starting price of £16,585.

Its 1630-litre boot with the seats folded down trumps that of the Ford Focus Estate (1502 litres) and Volkswagen Golf Estate (1620 litres).

The new Astra Sports Tourer is a techno-fest that's widely available to the public. Inside, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide integrated smartphone connectivity, while an automatically opening tailgate (part of the Keyless Entry and Start package) makes loading the boot a lot easier.

As well as the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (£17,285) and 1.6-litre Whisper Diesel (£18,785) that can return 83.1 mpg and emit 89 g/km, the Astra Sports Tourer gets a new 1.6-litre bi-turbodiesel. Official figures come in at 67.3 mpg and 112 g/km, despite sprinting to 62 mph in just 8.4 seconds.

Vauxhall Mokka X Previews New Design Language

Arriving in British showrooms late in 2016, the Mokka X demonstrated a new design language for the future SUVs and crossovers of Vauxhall. These include a wing-shaped horizontal front grille and a sharp set of LED daytime running lights. The rear of the Mokka X remains mostly unchanged, with it being a facelift as opposed to a brand-new car.

It features a brand-new, redesigned dashboard that's said to be inspired by the current-generation Astra.

Vauxhall's refreshed crossover will feature a new 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit that's able to produce 150 bhp. With a 6-speed automatic transmission, it returns a claimed 42.8 mpg and emits 154 g/km. All-wheel-drive models are driven by the front wheels in normal conditions, with up to 50% of the power being delivered to the rear wheels in slippery situations.

Vauxhall GT Concept

Powered by the same 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine found in the ADAM, Corsa and Astra, the GT concept produces 143 bhp and 205 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 6-speed sequential transmission which features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

With a sub-1,000 kg weight, the GT gets to 62 mph in under 8 seconds and on to a top speed of 134 mph.

Familiar Vauxhall technology is used in the GT concept, including the glare-free high-beam lighting from the IntelliLux LED matrix lighting. The button-free interior is operated primary by voice controls and a central touchpad.

Despite having a definite concept car look about it, the GT could make its way to British showrooms in the distant future as an affordable yet attractive sports coupé. The camera replacements for wing mirrors are very unlikely to be carried over, as is the extreme design.

Opel (Vauxhall) Ampera-e to Improve upon other EVs

Very little information is available at this moment in time, but the fully electric vehicle will launch next year, dubbed the Ampera-e. Although the Ampera left British markets last year, the Chevrolet Cruze (American version) is still going strong with the redesigned 2016 model coming on sale.

Despite the British Ampera's relative failure, the Opel Group plans to introduce no less than 29 new models before 2020, with electric-powered vehicles playing a substantial part.

The 5-door car will seat 5 people and have "a longer range on a full charge than most electric cars" alleviating the preoccupation known as range anxiety. It will also be affordably priced. If the American Chevy Bolt is anything to go by, it will have a 200-mile range and be priced from $30,000 (£20,800). The Bolt takes 9 hours to charge with a 240V power supply, and produces 197 bhp and 361 Nm giving it considerable acceleration.

It's Opel's answer to modern urbanisation, tackling environmental concerns, and ready to take on the likes of the VW e-Golf and BMW i3 (both costing about £31,000).

Vauxhall Mokka

Vauxhall puts its Mokka against the Nissan Juke and Škoda Yeti. If it were more upmarket, we'd be talking Audi Q3 and BMW X1 territory. Well, is it upmarket enough to compete directly? Let's take a look.

Apparently, 75% of the Mokka's buyers are private, the other 25% belonging to company car drivers. For this, Vauxhall debuted the Mokka with S, Exclusiv, Tech Line and SE trims with Tech Line being specifically aimed at company car drivers who require some added comfort for those long journeys.

Despite the claims of having a "muscular stance", it's also said to display an "elegant exterior". The perky rear end, integrated spoiler and countless creases and folds along the body certainly suggest just that.

What we wouldn't necessarily assume is that the Mokka is a practical crossover, but with a road clearance of 157 mm and the option of four-wheel-drive it's well-equipped for those days where the owner dares exit the bright lights of the city. The 4x4 system is activated automatically when the car decides it's necessary, and thanks to its light design (65 kg) the Mokka is able to stay light, helping fuel economy and driving dynamics. Weighing between 1260-1415 kg means that it can tow up to 1,200 kg braked and 500 kg unbraked.

The 356-litre boot is less than average in its class. Despite being larger than that of the Ford EcoSport (333 litres) and similar to the Nissan Juke (354 litres) and Peugeot 2008 (360 litres), it doesn't offer quite as much as the Škoda Yeti (416 litres), Renault Captur (455 litres), Audi Q3 (420 litres) or new BMW X1 (505 litres). With its seats folded down though, it offers a comparable amount to its rivals apart from the 1760 litres offered by the Yeti thanks to its boxy design. Don't be put off though, with a low load lip and flat load bay after having folded the 60:40 split folding rear seats, the Mokka's boot is very useable.

With the Mokka comes Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control which works at speeds of 3-12 mph. All manuals come equipped with Start/Stop technology - the automatics do without.

You've got a choice of four 4-cylinder engines, 2 petrol and 2 diesel.

The 1.6i is a naturally aspirated unit which produces 115 PS @ 6,000 rpm and 155 Nm @ 4,000 rpm. Because it's mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, it manages a dismal 41.5 mpg and 159 g/km.

The turbocharged 1.4i kicks out 140 PS @ 4,900 rpm and 200 Nm @ 1,850-4,900 rpm. It can be had with a 6-speed automatic transmission, a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed manual with 4x4. Depending on your transmission, it can achieve between 40.9 and 45.6 mpg, emitting 145-160 g/km.

Next are the diesels. The 1.7 CDTi makes 130 PS @ 4,000 rpm and 300 Nm @ 2,000 rpm. Again, it can be mated to a 6-speed auto, a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed manual with 4x4. Economy varies -53.3 mpg to 62.8 mpg and 120-139 g/km.

Lastly is the 1.6 CDTi. Slightly more powerful than the 1.7, making 136 PS @ 3,500-4,000 rpm and 320 Nm @ 2,000-2,250 rpm. This has the same transmission and powertrain options as the 1.4i and 1.7 CDTi, with emissions varying between 114-134 g/km, running at 55.4-65.7 mpg. You can even have a 1.6 CDTi ecoFLEX. This is the most economical on offer. With no choice other than a 6-speed manual in a front-wheel-drive layout, it can achieve 68.9 mpg and emit as low as 109 g/km.

It's a shame that no Mokka manages the sub-100 g/km boundary, which means road tax will cost between £20-£180. Especially with the likes of the Renault Captur offering CO2 emissions from 95 g/km.

The quickest is the 1.6 CDTi FWD paired with a 6-speed manual, reaching 62 mph in 9.3 seconds. It goes on to a top speed of 119 mph which can only be beaten by the 1.4i offering 120 mph.

Standard spec is top notch for Vauxhall's compact crossover. Exclusiv offers a 230-volt (3-pin) plug for rear passengers, a front centre armrest, front passenger's underseat tray, front and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth®, a multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control with air con and 17- or 18-inch alloys depending on the engine choice. As regards media, it comes as standard with the CD 450 system - that's a CD player, auxiliary input, AM/FM radio and 6 speakers.

Tech Line has all the bells and whistles that Exclusiv can offer, but adds to that the Navi 950 IntelliLink which offers the same as the CD 450 but throws in a sat nav, audio streaming capabilities and a 7-inch display.

Top-of-the-line SE models come with the CD 450 setup as opposed to Navi 950 IntelliLink, but to make up for that you get the Winter Pack as standard (heated front seats and steering wheel) and ergonomic front sports seats with semi-electric adjustments. Certainly not what you'd expect for a small SUV like this, but then again it's such a competitive market Vauxhall needs to stay on top of its game.

At the moment there's a Limited Edition model. It's essentially an Exclusiv with a black roof and door mirrors and 19-inch 5-twinspoke alloys.

So what advice do I have for those in the market for a car of this type? The Yeti lacks imagination and its design doesn't appeal to the trendy city type. The Juke has always won customers from day one, and the Captur's definitely an interesting idea. Peugeot's 2008 doesn't seem to attract too many customers which is a shock due to its modern design, which leaves us with the bold Mokka. It's your style that will finally decide.

But here's how I would spec my Mokka:

There's one car that I'm particularly interested in finding out more about. It's not a fancy BMW or even a Rolls-Royce. It's the humble Vauxhall Astra that has been in our lives for some 36 years.

We won't know much about it until its world première at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show this September, but Vauxhall has released some information about it now.

As with any new car, it's been on a diet. Although it has saved "up to" 200kg, Vauxhall has been honest in saying that the average saving was a realistic 130kg, which helps improve refinement and efficiency I'm sure.

Talking about efficiency, there's an option of a 1.0-litre petrol unit which kicks out 105 PS or a range of 1.6-litre 'Whisper Diesel' units capable of producing between 110 and 160 PS. But what Vauxhall's really keen for us to know about is its new 1.4-lite 4-cylinder petrol engine producing 145 PS and 250 Nm.

As regards its magnificent design, well, just wow! Look at it! That's not the Astra I'm used to! Its darkened C-pillar helps make the illusion of a floating roof, something that every car manufacturer seems to be going for nowadays. Add to that the front headlights that fuse into the grille and the perky rear end and you have yourself a more luxurious family car.

It's just under 5cm shorter and 2.6cm lower. Even the wheelbase has shrunk by 2cm, but Vauxhall claims to have added 35mm to the rear passengers' legroom thanks to some newly designed seats.

Inside you've got Vauxhall's IntelliLink infotainment system which is capable of connecting to an iPhone or Android using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The new IntelliLux LED Matrix Light Headlights are a group of 8 LED segments on each side that automatically and continuously adapt to avoid blinding oncoming vehicles. The company claims that LED headlights help you spot things 30-40m earlier than xenon or halogen lights, thus giving you an additional 1.5 seconds of thinking time.

Although not standard equipment, it will be possible to specify the new Astra with Traffic Sign Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indication, Forward Collision Alert with Collision Imminent Braking, Cruise Control with Speed Limiter, Advanced Park Assist, Rear View Camera, Side Blind Spot Alert an18-way adjustable driver’s seat, massage function, ventilation and heated outer rear seats.

Vauxhall Viva

The Viva will be in Vauxhall's showrooms in the summer and will start at a fiver short of £8,000. It'll be offered in SE and SL trims just like the original Viva. There will be two additions though, sitting between SE and SL. The SE Air Con and SE ecoFLEX.

The only engine option is a 1.0-litre 75 PS petrol unit. It returns a claimed 62.8 mpg or 65.7 mpg for normal or ecoFLEX engines respectively, emitting 99 or 104 g/km of CO2.

SE models have ABS, ESP with traction control, front, side and curtain airbags and ISOFIX for the rear outermost seats. You even get a TPMS and Lane Departure Warning.

Inside, a speed-sensitive power-assisted steering incorporates a City Mode for even lighter steering, front electric windows only, cruise control, an auxiliary input, a multifunction steering wheel, height adjustment on the driver's seat and 60:40 split folding rear seats.

Daytime running lights, front fog lights and 15-inch wheels finish the SE off. It's important to note that these aren't alloys.

SE Air Con adds the obvious.

SE ecoFLEX bring along with it a front lip spoiler, an extended rear spoiler and ultra-low rolling resistance tyres.

Top-of-the-range SL adds an electronic climate control, USB and Bluetooth® for the audio system, six speakers, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, tinted rear windows and 15-inch alloys (yay!).

Pricing for the Viva? From £7,995 for SE to £9,495 for the SL. Great, compared to the £8,995 Nissan Micra, the £10,695 Hyundai i20 and the £8,999 Suzuki Swift.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

Tell me about it.

The Zafira Tourer is Vauxhall's 7-seater MPV, set above the 5-seater Meriva. It has taken over from the age-old Zafira, and I must say, it has impressed me.

In Europe, 2.2 million Zafiras have been sold, so the Tourer has some big boots to fill.

Where does Vauxhall see this vehicle?

Take a look at what they have to say:

"...the seven -seat Zafira Tourer is expected not only to attract traditional MPV customers, but also those customers who may never have considered such a vehicle."

Is it well-equipped?

I would say so. 

Base-model SE has daytime running lights, air conditioning, DAB, an aux-in socket, multifunction steering wheel, cruise control and electrically adjustable heated door mirrors. It's important to note that the 17-inch wheels (or 16-inch for 1.8 16v VVT 140 PS) are not alloys and that only the front windows are electric. All models, including this SE, have 2 seats in the rear for children or emergencies, and what Vauxhall call a 35:30:35 split folding rear seating system, or what is more commonly known as '40:20:40'. However exact you want to be, they all fold independently. 

Exclusiv models add front fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, USB connectivity, a front centre armrest and electric rear windows.

Tech Line brings with it a sat nav, Bluetooth®, 17-inch alloys and tinted rear windows.

With the sporty SRi comes 18-inch alloys, sports chassis, pedals and seats, a 3-spoke leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and a roof spoiler. Yes. On an MPV!

SE also has 17-inch alloys but adds an electric parking brake, storage under the driver's seat, an electro-chromatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror, automatic wipers and Vauxhall's FlexRail® centre console.

Top-of-the-range Elite trim has 18-inch alloys, perforated leather seats, heated front seats and a panoramic roof.

Overall then, great levels of standard kit.

What engines are there?

There's a 1.8-litre petrol engine producing 140 PS and 175 Nm. Unfortunately, economy figures are below average at 39.2 mpg and 169 g/km of CO2. It comes with a 5-speed manual transmission.

The 1.4-litre turbo-petrol isn't much better. It achieves 42.2 mpg according to Vauxhall and emits 158 g/km despite producing 140 PS and 200 Nm. That's with the 6-speed manual 'box. With the 6-speed automatic its benchmark figures are 39.2 mpg and 169 g/km.

The 1.6 CDTi ecoFLEX with Start/Stop is said to get 62.7 mpg and emit 119 g/km. Producing 136 PS and 320 Nm, you're stuck with a 6-speed manual here.

The 2.0-litre CDTi is less powerful with 130 PS and 300 Nm but gets worse figures - 55.4 mpg and 134 g/km. Again, a 6-speed manual.

There's a more powerful 2.0-litre CDTi - 170 PS and 400 Nm. Because it employs Start/Stop technology, it manages up to 57.7 mpg and 129 g/km. Well, that's with the 6-speed manual. The 6-speed automatic gets a less than impressive 46.3 mpg and 161 g/km.

What options are available in addition to the standard equipment?

Seat Comfort Pack One adds 6-way manual and 4-way electric lumbar adjustment to the driver's seat. Seat Comfort Pack Two adds the same to the front passenger's seat in addition to the driver's. They're £170 and £320 respectively.

The Navi 650 system is £855, whereas the Navi 950 IntelliLink is £1,200. I suggest that you go online and find out what they are as there's too much to write here! For £525 the Infinity® Premium Sound System with 7 speakers and a subwoofer if yours, though.

The Premium Forward Lighting Pack adds some really nice dark-style bi-xenon headlights and high-pressure headlight washers as well as the standard LED daytime running lights for £790.

Is it practical for family life?

Offering more than 700 litres with the 2nd row of seats up and just over 100 litres short of 2000 with them down, the boot is very useful. It doesn't scare the Ford S-Max though, which has a more-than-a-supermini capacity with the 3rd-row seats up.

MPVs come in two categories - 5-seater and 7-seater. Within both are small and large. The Vauxhall Zafira Tourer is a small 7-seater MPV which places it against the Ford S-Max or Volkswagen Touran as opposed to the larger Ford Galaxy or Volkswagen Sharan.
