MINI Paceman

The long doors and sleek coupé styling make the Paceman the most attractive car in MINI's lineup. The new headlight arrangement includes built-in daytime running lights, but don't be fooled into thinking you're buying a cute little MINI. If we're not to count the differences of a few millimetres here and there, the Paceman is of equal dimension to the Countryman!

As opposed to having 3 rear seats and a 40:20:40 split folding rear seat layout like the Countryman, the Paceman only has 2 rear seats making it a 50:50 split. These supportive seats could be compared to thrones in comparison to other cars which choose the 2-seat layout for the back. Behind them is a 330-litre boot, but fold both seats down and you can reveal a 1,080-litre load space.

Because BMW own MINI, you'd expect the cabin to be upmarket. And you'd be right. The Paceman retains the large centre console speedo, but nestled into that is the infotainment display. Toggle between driving dynamics gauges, music and radio and MINI Connected Apps. There's even a section (namely, MINIMALISM) that'll rate your acceleration, braking and shifting out of 5 to help you achieve the best fuel economy.
The standard air conditioning system is easy to use and has all the features that you'd really need for good ventilation. With the automatic air conditioning system you get a little display with the temperature on and a redesigned button layout.

Personalisation is big for MINI. There are three trims as well as additional packages. SALT has velour mats and an ambient lighting system, whilst PEPPER adds automatic windscreen wipers and headlights, automatic air conditioning and LED fog lights. Top-of-the-range CHILI comes with a sports multifunction leather steering wheel and sports seats.
The MINI Paceman comes with no less than 6 airbags as standard and is a rightful owner of its 5-star Euro NCAP title. Both rear seats come with ISOFIX anchorage points too. Driver-assist technology comes in the form of Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Hill Start Assist, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) and even ALL4 all-wheel-drive.

The MINI Cooper Paceman uses a 1.6-litre petrol engine to produce 122 bhp and 160 Nm. MINI claims up to 47.9 mpg and 137 g/km. The MINI Cooper D Paceman, however, produces 112 bhp and 270 Nm from a 1.6-litre diesel engine. Figures are said to be 67.3 mpg and 111 g/km.
Also available is the MINI Cooper S Paceman. This time, 190 bhp and 240 Nm is produced from a 1.6-litre petrol engine which is said to achieve 47.1 mpg and emit 139 g/km. The MINI Cooper SD Paceman uses a 2.0-litre diesel unit to give it 143 bhp and 305 Nm. With efficiency of 62.8 mpg and 119 g/km, it's the least economical diesel.

All models can be specified with ALL4 all-wheel-drive with the exception of the JCW. With no exceptions, there's a choice of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.
Let's not forget the MINI John Cooper Works Paceman and its 1.6-litre petrol engine producing no less than 218 bhp and 280 Nm. I would've expected slightly more than the claimed 39.8 mpg and 165 g/km. With 0-62 mph covered in 6.8 seconds, it'll reach a top speed of 142 mph.

There's a choice of 15 alloys in total and 1 set of steel wheels. Combine that with 11 exterior colours and 4 roof colours and it's obvious that there's a possibility of making a one-in-a-kind MINI. (Ok, I can guarantee there will be other people out there with the same configuration as you, but it's highly unlikely that you'll come across one!) Step inside and customise the interior surfaces, inlays and upholstery further.
My pick of the bunch would be the respectably economical Cooper SD. Here's exactly how I would spec mine.
