Toyota Avensis

The first details of the new Avensis family have been released by Toyota, and in its 17th year, it's still being built in Britain, in the Burnaston plant in Derbyshire. From £17,765 for the Saloon and £18,945 for the Touring Sports, the new Avensis (what's the plural? Avensi?) are already available to order and should be delivered from late June.

Cruise control, air con, a 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth®, auto-dimming rear view mirror and power windows are all standard kit on base model Active. Step up to new Business Edition for the Toyota Touch 2 with Go touchscreen system, an 8-inch display, DAB, reversing camera, rain-sensing wipers, light-sensitive headlights, automatic air con and part-Alcantara seat upholstery. Another new trim level, Business Edition Plus, adds leather upholstery with Alcantara inserts. Top-of-the-range Excel upgrades the infotainment system to Toyota Touch 2 with Go Plus, a 10-speaker audio system, full leather seat upholstery and electrically adjustable heated front seats. Excel Touring Sports models gain a panoramic roof.

A Pre-Crash Safety system and LED rear and daytime running lights are standard kit for Active, while Business Edition throws in 17-inch alloys, Automatic High Beam, Lane Departure Warning and Road Sign Assist. BE Plus has the benefit of front fog lights with a cornering function, LED headlamps, rear privacy glass and a keyless entry system. Adaptive headlights that adjust to provide a better view through bends are part of the Excel trim.

Overall, 10 exterior colours are offered with the new ones being Havana Brown and Orion Blue.
Three engines are available, 2 diesels and 1 petrol.
The 110 bhp 1.6-litre D-4D diesel emits as low as 108 g/km of CO2 and achieves as much as 68.9 mpg.
Figures for the 141 bhp 2.0-litre D-4D diesel are similarly impressive at 119 g/km and 62.8 mpg.
The more nippy 145 bhp 1.8-litre Valvematic petrol emits 138 g/km and manages 47.4 mpg.
There are two things to remember though: figures are proven under lab conditions which make them virtually impossible to achieve, and they vary depending on the transmission (where applicable) and whether it's the Saloon or Touring Sports that you're looking at.
Diesels are always coupled to a 6-speed manual 'box, while that same transmission is offered in the 1.8-litre Valvematic or a CVT.

Pricing starts at £17,765 for the Active Saloon, and £18,945 for the Active Touring Sports. That's with the 1.8-litre Valvematic and a 6-speed manual transmission. They top off at £26,635 and £28,440 for the Excel using the 2.0-litre D-4D.
